Whitney Handicap Invitational 8/06/2011
The historic Whitney Handicap Invitational will be taking place on Saturday at Saratoga and is definitely a horse race that you do not want to miss. This race is rich with history that is a $750,000 purse at 1 1/8 mile. The biggest upset was in 1973 when Secretariat finished 2nd and the current record for 1 1/8 was Lawyer Ron in a powerful race back in 2007. There will be an 11 horse field of solid horses so should be a great race. The inside pose has been know to have a bias so if that is true again this year Flat out has a solid shot at winning.
Pletcher will be the trainer to watch because he has a lot of success at the Whitney Handicap. Last year he finished 2nd with Quality Road to be beaten by Blame who went on to win the Classic. This year his ace in the hole is Mission Impazible. Mission Impazible just finished 2nd in the Stephen Foster Handicap against a strong field and had a 1st place finish in March against Apart and Giant Oak. He will face a strong field on Saturday but with a good trip has a great chance at winning the invitational.
Rail Trip who drew the seven post position is said to be in great form. This horse finished 2nd in the Easy Goer just behind Friend or Foe but will be interesting to see if he can get a good trip on Saturday.
Another horse that poses as a strong contender for this Saturdays race is Flat out. This horse had a 20 month lay off but last win was a 6 1/2 length win at Belmont Park Suburban and did it on his 9th career start. If this horse continues to get better could be the one to beat. Here is the field below and there could be a case for any of these horses but the ones to watch I feel will be Flat Out and Mission Impazible.
1. Flat Out Alex Solis 117 4-1
2. Friend or Foe Lezcano 115 8-1
3. Morning Line John Velazquez 118 10-1
4. Giant Oak Shaun Bridgmohan 119 5-1
5. Tizway Rajiv Maragh 118 6-1
6. Mission Impazible J avier Castellano 118 6-1
7. Rail Trip Ramon Dominguez 117 12-1
8. Headache Miguel Mean 116 20-1
9. Rodman Edgar Prado 114 20-1
10. Apart Julien Leparoux 117 6-1
11. Duke of Mischief Joe Bravo 117 8-1
So stay tuned it should be a great race to watch and a great Breeders Cup Prep race!
