2017 Kentucky Derby Picks

The race to the roses is only 3 short days away where we will have the 2 most exciting minutes of sports with the 2017 Kentucky Derby. The first Kentucky Derby was held in 1875 so this rich tradition has went on for many years. This week in Louisville, KY the home of Churchill Downs will have a variety of parties and festivals leading up to the big day. The question is WHO will win the Kentucky Derby and go down the difficult task of trying to win the Triple Crown in 2017.

Only 12 horses have managed to get this done with the most recent in 2015 by American Pharoah. Here is a list of the 12:

Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), Affirmed (1978), and American Pharoah (2015).

I am coming off the cuff here but after watching some of the last prep races there are some horses that stand out to me for sure. Most of the previous prep races are winners chasing down tired horses at the last second. That honestly is not very impressive to me because that could swing by a split second either way.

What I am looking for is a horse that has good stamina and more than anything explosive speed! If a horse can have these two features and be able to adjust when the time is right that is the one that can go the distance. So here are some horses that I would look for to be in the mix on Saturday.

- Disclaimer: This is based off of a Fast Track, we all know when the rain comes everything goes up into the air as you try to find a horse that likes the surface or the ones that just don’t mind it.

IRAP- I thought this was a good stamina vicory in the Toyota Blue Grass. He stayed among the leaders and really held his ground all the way to the end. So I would look for this horse to be in the top 4 in the Derby.

IRISH WAR CRY- in the Wood Memorial this was a strong battle throughout the race with Battalion Runner and Irish War Cry pulled away with a very good length victory. I like the spunk of this horse and expect it to be in the top 3 for sure!

HENCE- This horse had a great race where he sat back then dueled for the lead. Coming close to the end that is where I saw the explosive power that I was looking for.

ALWAYS DREAMING- Rode a very solid race and exploded in the stretch in the Florida Derby for a big victory against some strong rivals. I can see this race coming down to Always Dreaming and Hence going at it until the Finish.

Well for what it is worth those are the top 4 that I am going with. Today they will be drawing the post positions so I would keep that as a factor when the roll out on how to put these horses in your bet. Happy Handicapping!
